It's true, I have a new and improved blog in the works — the only problem is that right now, although it is new it is not quite improved...I'm trying to alter the HTML code myself and it's taking some Internet research and lots of trouble shooting. I feel like such a techie.

But in the meantime...I have a new haircut, new hair color, and neeew glasses.

Despite my interest in following the runway and keeping up on trends, I only adapt styles into my personal wardrobe that I really love and feel inspire by.

For example, fashionable “ugly shoes,” drop-crotch pants, Doc Martens — all on the runway, all hot in the blogosphere, and all wrong for me.

That being said, there are a few trends I adore, but can’t seem to figure out how to interpret into my own style.

Case in point: bright tights. I think they look perfect on Blair Waldorf and fashion bloggers the world over, but I have been a bit hesitant about donning them myself.

When I finally took the steps from basic black to gray to dark blue, green, and plum, to bright blue…I just wasn’t sure what to think. I even took a picture of myself to see how I looked to the rest of the world — I was that concerned. And I was actually quite satisfied. But then I’d look down and see my real-life bright blue legs and just…giggle.

No longer for cheeseburgers and french fries alone, mustard yellow + tomato red has become one of my favorite color combinations. Especially paired with red and black checks or plaid — it's a fresh look that will stand out in the crowd. And according to color theory, yellow and red induce hunger. Although that may be a little weird, I'm lovin' it.

I'd say I qualify for avid-crocheter status. That's right, I said it. Avid crocheter. I always hate typing the word though- I pronounce it "crotch-it-er" in my head. So anyway, for Christmas I crocheted beanies, scarfs, headbands, doggie beanies and even cute lil iPod cases for all the sisters, moms, aunts and cousins. Then when I finished that, I made beanies for myself in every yarn color I had. Then I made a few headbands.

Now that I'm finished, I don't really know what to do with myself...guess it's time for Christmas break to come to a close.

I don't consider myself a long-hair type [whatever that type is], but recently I've really been wanting longer hair. The problem is that I always what some exciting change when I go under the scissors, whether it be a new color or drastic layers, and long hair just seems boring. But this girl epitomizes all my long-hair hopes. Dark, disheveled, funky layers, bold bangs — long, but far from homely or drab.

Last year I developed a penchant for mustard yellow — a love that cannot be diminished. My love for all things mustard has grown deep, from kitchen appliances to clothing accessories. Over time, my love has expanded from mustard to other variations of yellow, including chartreuse and lemon. And what better to cheer the winter months than a dash of yellow sunshine.

Buffalo, gingham, madras, checks, whatever...I just can't fight the urge to add plaid to my wardrobe. Everytime I go shopping, I am drawn to anything plaid-ish in the store. And when I recently did a little wardrobe inventory to sell things to Plato's Closet, I found an overwhelming amount of plaid.

Why do I have this odd addiction? What is so alluring about the print of farmers, truckers, lumberjacks and [now] hipsters? I can't quite say, but I just hope it I don't get tired of it by next season.

A love for sewing, baking, florals and keds, I guess I have many interests comparable to that of an 80-year-old woman. Adding to my list of elderly hobbies is my new-found crocheting skills.

After about 27 "practice pieces" and a great deal of frustration, I finally got it down, and I'm very excited about it. There's something about putting that yarn through loop after loop that is just so satisfying. Really. Try it.

I've been on the lookout for some saddle oxfords or wingtip shoes at thrift stores for months now and I just can't seem to find any. The only ones to be found are $80 + at stores like Urban Outfitters, where I refuse to pay for anything that isn't on the sale rack...but I'm reeeaaally in need here!

I have also been wanting a new red coat, and have come across plenty, but none that seem just right. The coat in the image above is just what I'm looking for, but of course it's in the $200 range...and so my search continues.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I am doing an internship sorta thing with an online magazine called "Mankind Mag" and the first issue that I have contributed to was published this week.

Mankind Mag focuses on style, design and art, typically by lesser-known, D.I.Y types. The latest issue is "The Handmade Issue" and specifically features all things handmade. I wrote an article on handmade clothing — a perfect task for me, considering my expanding knowledge of sewing.

The magazine is in conjunction with the blog/website Design for Mankind, where you can purchase the magazine in print or download it for free!

Stylista

Like The Hills without all the scandalous drama, like The Rachel Zoe Project without the obnoxious Rachel Zoe, and like Project Runway without...well, the runway...Stylista is my new fashion-related TV show of the moment.

I really don't like TV much, and I particularly can't stand when it's on in a social setting, but I do love fashion. So naturally, I do enjoy fashion-based shows. And Stylista is no exception.

Never before has a TV show pertained so much to my life...after all, I did just apply for an internship at Elle Magazine — the very set of the show. And I been answering the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" with "a fashion editor" for many years.

So Stylista is just perfect! A reality-style competition for a position as junior editor at Elle, the show provides an inside look at my (possible) future.

From the contestant wardrobe choices to the final editorial layouts, I soak up every moment of the show. I may have even watched the first two episodes twice.

But best of all, the show gives me hope. A timed competition for finding clothing with darts, set-in sleeves and pin tucks in the Elle closet? Pshh..a breeze! A challenge involving an editorial page on "hidden gems" in China Town? Ha...Easier than writing about Provo's Center Street for Square Magazine!

And the contestants genuinely seem to struggle with the challenges. I mean...I'm sure it's a sliiightly tougher with cameras, teammates, time-limits, an internation magazine editor hovering over your shoulder...but still. Stylista Season 2, sign me up.

I had no idea what I have been missing out on. Sally Jane Vintage made a post yesterday about the designer Orla Keily, and it was just...life-changing.

Not that my life has changed at all...I guess what I mean to say is that it was just amazing. I don't know how I have never come across this designer, because her clothes are the epitome of the style I hope to achieve every day when I walk out the door.

Colorful, bold, vintage-inspired-without-being-too-retro, put-together-without-being-too matchy...just amazing. I need every single item in her look book, I think. From the adorable Swiss braided hair to the stacked platform wedges. Amazing.

But being realistic...I don't need everything from her line. I don't really need anything at all, when it comes to clothes...but I do need those tights. And that jacket. And that other jacket...oh and that bag. But really, I need those tights.

And though feathers have been dominating much of my accessories lately, floral touches are just as lovely.

Jersey knit fabric roses can be easily made with a few pulls of needle and thread, then added to headbands, scarves, jackets, necklaces, purses, or whatever else your heart desires.

Posts about Ruche, a new online boutique, popped up all over my Google Reader yesterday. Of course I immediately took the recommendations of Liebemarlene and The Clothes Horse and checked out the Web Site, and it was love.

Liebemarlene compared the pricing of this Site to Forever 21 - while I wouldn't consider the prices quite that low, they are quite reasonable for a "boutique." Not to mention, I love everything about the light-weight denim dresses, oxford shoes and plaid coats!

My current status as a single college student is quite restricting when it comes to interior design opportunities. As it is, I come home from thrift and fabric stores with a mind exploding with ideas — ones that must be put aside until a later date, when I have more space and more freedom (like the freedom to paint my walls).

So for now, envisioning is all I can do. And I do it a lot. And when I envision, this is exactly the vision I have. The home of graphic designer/retired-Anthropologie-window-designer married duo Wary Meyers, these images perfectly capture all that I strive for in my future residence.

Vintage-inspired looks exemplified with thrift store purchases, bright bursts of color and touch of modernity with Ikea-esque furniture, it's everything I could ever dream.

I failed my first sewing quiz, I didn't buy enough fabric for our first sewing project, I struggle to stay awake in my Mon/Wed sewing lecture and I think my sewing T.A. hates me — but nonetheless, my enthusiasm cannot be killed.

Today was a rainy-day welcome to fall...and I loved it.

Although the harsh, never-endingness of last winter leaves me dreading the days of freezing temperatures and — even worse — slick sidewalks and snow-piled lawns, I am enjoying the occasional overcast, drizzly day.

I'm also enjoying the a-absolutely-dorable looks of this magazine editors in the picture above, reminding me that I neeed a stylish rain coat + umbrella, paired with a striped shirt...and gray skirt...and eye-catching bag...and understated loafers — basically I just need that outfit [on the left].

My favorite style blog of the moment is always highly evident in my clothing choices — seeing the bohemian/haphazard style of one blogger will lead me to wear a wristful of bangles and tousled hair day after day, while the crisp, polished style of another blogger will lead me to tuck in blouses to a belted skirt multiple days out of the week.

Lately though, I feel like my style is taking a more permanent change — during the early summer, I was already planning how I would pattern my fall/winter style after the Band of Outsiders Fall runway show, and that thinking has stuck with me ever since.

Browsing the online stores the likes of Toast, A.P.C., and Wikstenmade have made me strive for a style that is 50 percent Americana and 50 percent Swedish countryside dweller. The above looks showcase the look I am going for — one that will hopefully help me transition from college casual to business professional in the next year or so.

Fewer distractions [like unnecessary accessories and overly-trendy items] and quality stand-alone pieces lay the foundation for this look, leading me to seek out unique shirts, dresses and skirts that are fashion-foward, yet classy.

I've had a long-running checklist of necessary wardrobe items, and last week I finally got to check off nearly everything on the list.

Okay, so the items weren't exaaactly "necessary," but most are wardrobe staples that I will incorporate in my fall and winter style in a big way — the blazer and cropped jeans in particular.

And a little more about those jeans: they are a-mazing, and to add to the amazingness, they were only $12.50 at Forever 21. They are perfect fit, perfect length and perfect wash. In the fall, they will look adorable with oxfords, moccasins and gladiators, and in the winter they will be perfect for sliding into leather riding boots. Everyone deserves this pair of jeans, really.

Freshly dyed dark hair + a blazing bright sun do not make for a good combo. And so, not being much of a hat wearer, I hesitantly made the decision to buy a hat, for my many summer days by the King Henry poolside, the Mexican coast beach side, or simply my California backyard-side.

Deciding on the type of hat was the next step. Baseball cap? Definitely not. Newsboy cap? Too wintery/played out. Cowboy hat? Never. So MTV spring break.

My first choice, inspired by my lovely roommate Nicole, was the large straw sun hat. A flippant choice, more of a joke than a serious fashion statement, but a practical joke at least.

Nonetheless, that large straw sun hat never made it out in public. I just couldn't do it. So I moved on.

A few months later, standing in line to board our cruise ship with the family, I spotted a street side vendor that was selling $10 hats. This was a pricier option than my $1 section Target sun hat, but I had the thought [for some reason] that this hat would get more use.

Therefore, the straw fedora became the second hat to add to my collection. I wore it all day, and I loved it. It was the star of our prom-style/cruise family picture. But now I haven't worn it since.

Maybe its the played-out-celebrity-trend factor, or the slightly-too-small-for-my-head factor, or the make-my-hair-nasty factor. Or maybe I am just not a hat person, a fact that I knew all along.

In N' Out Burger's animal style fries are a little more enjoyable for your tastebuds and a little more of a wild ride for your stomach than the usual homemade fresh potato fries, and the same goes for these more-daring-style rings.
Not that they are wild for your stomach. Just a wilder style choice than the typical cocktail ring, yadidamean? These rings made their way to the top of my "most wanted" list when I saw them at a flea market in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and, as I was not on the top of my bartering game yet, I declined to pay $35 for one.
The rest of my trip to Mexico, I desperately searched for a similar ring. At the last minute, I scooped up one with a crab on it for $10, which is "pretty much for free," as the resident Mexicans would say.
Still, I dream of the exquisitely hand-carved tigers, snakes and bears I saw at that one street-side market in Puerto Vallarta. If I could go back, I would buy that ring for $35 fo sho. Or, better yet, I would use my now excellently-honed bartering skills and buy it for less than one Hamilton.

One day, I went to D.I. and saw my cousin Heather there. She always finds good fabric there to make her lovely home-sewn purses [which will perhaps be featured here someday], so I invited her to peruse the fabric section with me, in hopes that her luck would rub off.

Just as I was tossing bags and bags of "grab bags" of fabric to the side, I spotted one that looked promising. Still, I may just have passed it by if Heather hadn't confirmed my thinking with, "Ooo that looks like a good one."

That was all it took — done. sold. I bought it for $3, checked it out as I got into my car, and was overjoyed to find prize after prize — vintage scarves, headbands and even a sailor-style dress collar...it was heaven.

Now I have headwear, purse accesories, belts, neck attire... for life.

We always find ourselves matching or coordinating, Hanalei and I. sometimes we both wear dresses, sometimes we wear the same colors, sometimes we wear the exact same shirt that we both bought at H&M when we were separately in California.

Joining the ranks of the Walmart dollar section fabric is the versatile, ever-handy Walmart spray paint.

In the past few weeks, I have purchased metallic gold, aqua, ballet pink and apple green. I've put these colors to good use, paintin the town with endearing vintage shades.

First to be sprayed was my Walmart White Stag tennis shoes — from canvas white to blingin gold. Next was my first bike [R.I.P.] — 80s purple to soft 50s pink.

Over the course of the next week, I sprayed a D.I. mirror — rusted bronze to bright lime, a Magna bike — dark blue to precious pale blue, and another bike — dark orange to apple green.

So there you have it, I'm paintin up a storm.

Gallatin County, Montana: Population 275 — site of my weekend getaway, where we feasted like kings, traversed like explorers and dressed like natives. Native Americans, that is.

I've been pining for a pair of dream catcher earrings ever since my Native American-inspired clothing love affair began. And after searching all Forever 21s, H&Ms and Urban Outfitters high and low, I am still dream-catcher-earringless.

But after visiting the grand country of West Yellowstone, MT, I have the next best thing — a dream catcher necklace — in my possession. Way more legit than a mass produced retail version anyway.

I just have to make sure not to wear my Minnetonka moccasins, peacock feather earrings and new necklace all at once.

Non-traditional, clever, humorous and resonating, I'm precisely 43 pages in, and I love it. I'm pleased to recommend it. In fact, I insist you read it.

Lately I haven't been wishing for much - I'm trying to just get in more than one wearing of a dress or shirt or pair of shoes before I go on the next shopping spree...there is just one thing on my wish list of the moment: wide-let denim trouser jeans. I just can't seem to find the perfect pair. Yet they would be so perfect with a summery, tucked-in blouse and simple bright flats.

And I like the name of these pants, cause I've always wanted to call jeans "trousers," like the Brih-ish. I also like the trouser cut better than the usual wide-leg denim...they seem a little more wearable and a little more flattering, for anyone who is not model size at least.

Lately, I find myself always reaching for the nude-colored heel, flat or sandal to complete my spring and summer outfits.

More modern that white, more understated than metallic, nude is the perfect neutral for the season.

Nude goes with everything - as all neutrals do - and I am especially pleased to wear the color since my skin-color nude has recently become darker than my shoe-color nude.

Officially titled the Choco-Scutterbotch Cookie by...some recipe book I can't remember at the moment..., all you need to know about these cookies is that they some of the best your taste buds will ever experience.
Butterscotch, chocolate, pecans, and cakie/crispy goodness.

{recipe}
1/3 C. shortening
1/3 C. butter
2 eggs
1 pkg yellow cake mix
1 C. rice crispies
1/2 C. butterscotch chips
1/2 C. milk chocolate chips
1/2 C. semi-sweet choc. chips
1/2 C. coarsely chopped pecans

Combine shortening and butter with brown sugar. Mix well. Add eggs, one at a time. Mix until well blended. Stir
in cereal, chips and nuts. Shape dough into balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees.

My lovely and talented cousin Heather recently gave me the blue-colored wicker purse featured above. The compact size and small handles follow my latest inclination toward pint-sized purses - a refreshing change from my usual Mary Poppins-sized bag.

I've also been leaning toward all skirts and dresses with pleats, tiers and any other interesting details, the perfect dash of girly and preppy to my wardrobe.

For a finishing touch, pastel-colored nail polish has been my greatest delight. Like the trend in purses, nail color has gone in the opposite direction - from dark plums and blues to light lemons, tangerines, and - my personal favorite - robin's egg blue.

Lately I've felt a little blogged out - even with eight hours in front of a computer screen on a daily basis, with more than enough time to get in a blog or two, I just haven't felt the blogging desire.

But then I came across this picture in my iPhoto - this beautiful cornucopia of color, this wide range of flavors and textures...my tastebuds water just looking at it.

With my love of experimentation in both fashion and food, I requested a little twist on a favorite recipe for my recent birthday meal with the family.

Pork sirloin, fresh pineapple, red onions and green peppers - this meal was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, tender and crunchy. The yellows, purples and greens were also a lovely food-blogging site - especially with the fruit and spinach salads on the side.

A-mazing.

I'm a little behind on this, but in my eyes, Rami was the winner of Project Runway Season 4. The show ended a few months ago, but I just caught up and watched the entire season during my vacation at home- and why Christian may have been the most entertaining character, I have to admit that I liked Rami's final fashion show the best. His intricate details and luxurious colors and fabrics are oh so glamorous.

About three months ago, seeing me without earrings on was a rare sight indeed. I have a wide collection of earrings; I particularly appreciate this accessory for its outfit-completing and face-de-rounding qualities.

But then, one fateful day, a friend told the tale of a girl he knew who split her earlobe open because of excessive earring wearage. The said girl was napping one day and her earring caught on a pillow and just slid right through the ear. Now, a year later, her ear is still split, and it may take some sort of post-inserting surgery to fix the problem.

I listened to this story, truly horrified, and realized I must change my ways. And so I did. Not wanting to end up another split-ear girl, I have replaced my earrings with cocktail rings- and with rings as cute as these, I don't even mind. Going out sans earrings even seems summer appropriate, allowing for more carefree, easy/breezy days.

The Ferry Plaza farmers' market in San Francisco is not only the best in the world [according to Southwest Airlines magazine anyway] but also has some of the hippest, most stylish customers in the world.

From youthful moms to elderly Asians, the crowd donned a wide variety of looks. I managed to get a couple Sartorialist-esque shots of some particularly fashionable market-goers, without them even noticing [I hope].

Another highlight of the whole event was receiving a FREE farmers' market tote. So eco-friendly a.k.a. trendy. And free!

With the end of the semester approaching and a mass amount of frozen food, I have been cooking to feed the thousands with my otherwise wasted food items.

Last night was a Japanese themed meal, with stir fry, dumplings, edemame and brown rice. The previous night was a traditional Sunday dinner of baja citrus marinaded chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, salad, corn, and cheesy biscuits. The meal seemed to be never-ending -- the people kept coming and the food kept supplying -- we literally fed about 17 mouths.

Each course was enjoyed by all, but the real hit was the desert -- a raspberry chocolate truffle cake.

{ingredients} this homemade chocolate cake baked in 2 round pans, with homemade raspberry jam spread in between, topped with powdered sugar, sliced strawberries and cool whip.

My sewing machine, a Gen X Hanes T, and many other cheaply made shirts have failed me. But after a long, frustrating journey [its seriously been like a year] involving wasted time and wasted money, my search for the perfect v-neck has come to an end.

It is not American Apparel nor Urban Outfitters, but Gap, that has blessed me with this glorious wardrobe basic.

It's the perfect relaxed fit, the perfect soft texture, and the almost-perfect price.

Okay, not the perfect price at all, in my opinion, but I am someone who spends an average of $5 to $10 on any clothing item. [Despite what Stacey and Clinton may say, I am not a firm believer in wardrobe "investment pieces."]

Still, at $16.50, the amazingness of these T's surpass the price -- and still beats out American Apparel's Deep V for $18 and Urban's Graphic V for $24. I bought one in black and one in white, and I plan on wearing these things to their already-dreaded death.

H&M recently launched a new line entitled "A Tribute to Marimekko." A Finnish company that greatly influenced the 60s and 70s with their bold, bright patterns, Marimekko has apparently been long-admired by H&M.

The line is receiving rave reviews, which is making me wonder, am I the only one who is slightly repulsed by the pieces? Channeling "Saved By the Bell" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," although quality television, isn't really what I qualify as chic and/or fashionable.

And what iiis that vest? Apparently H&M does have the ability to do some wrong...

A couple of my roommates have quite the sensitive noses, and have made it clear that they dread the occasions when I'm feeling in the mood for salmon. So, it is much to their dismay that I have been on a salmon kick lately.

Though I don't consider myself a huge seafood lover, I do enjoy the taste and health benefits of salmon, as this fresh-water fish is high in protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamin D.

A perfectly cooked salmon fillet is so tender that it falls apart at the touch of a fork and melts the moment it touches the tastebuds. Salmon is excellently complimented by spinach salad, with the honey dijon dressing adding a sweet touch to the fillet.

Today, I saw a great sight. There I was, walking along campus, frustrated with the dilemma of trying to keep my skirt, scarf, and beanie from blowing away with the fierce wind and feeling like someone must have inserted extra hours into this particular Thursday afternoon, due to the sluggish pace at which it was passing by.

But then, I saw a boy--strutting down the walkway between the SWKT tower and the McKay building, lookin' like he [felt like he] owned the world.

He was wearing carpenter jeans. And in that ever-so-functional hammer loop was some sort of musical contraption, of which the exact identity is unknown -- but what I do know is that the contraption was blasting Journey's early 80s hit, "Wheel In The Sky."

I felt like I was in a horrible/terrible/awesome 80s movie, and this unknown character had just dominated over the jerky jock guy and won the heart of the beguiling blonde...

Now, when I have my iPod headphones in, I sometimes feel like I am living life with my own movie soundtrack...but this guy decided let everyone around him become a part of the movie he was in.

I hope he wasn't offended when I laughed out loud at the sight of him--as much as I find carpenter pants to be one of the worst styles of denim ever invented, I truly, genuinely enjoyed the sight of him, his carpenters, and his modern-day ghetto blaster.

When I changed the name of my blog from "Lookin' Good" to "Fresh Out the Kitchen," my mom [a.k.a. my No. 1 reader] inquired about the meaning of this new title. I think she thought it had something to do with food...but in reality, it's just a lil slang from my favorite R&B phenomenon, R. Kelly.

Still, this food reference got me thinking. My love of food runs almost as deep as my love for clothes, and I family and roommates are always glancing at my latest kitchen creations with an envious eye...

And so begins the culinary segment of "Fresh Out the Kitchen:" While the title originally referred to everything new and hot in terms of fashion trends, I am now extending it to cover all things fresh out the kitchen, literally and figuratively.

Dinner last night featured incredibly delicious, light, and refreshing "Asian-inspired" lettuce wraps. For those who haven't had the joy of trying this presumably Americanized dish at your local Chili's, these wraps are somewhat like the Asian equivalent of a Mexican Taco--only much more healthy.

many asians seem to have a partiular knack for style-- a natural ability to look chic and effortless in conservative, classic styles and wacky trends alike.
living in a sea of white, conservative, republican, LDS college students doesnt leave much room for style variety, but i always anticipate passing a particular intersection near international student housing. here, i often catch glimpses of pint-sized asian girls clad in creative ensembles that stand out among the typical uniform of hooded sweatshirts and ill-fitting jeans.
flickr style guru boboniaa certainly fits the asian-fashionista-bill, with her perfect mix of vintage grandma dresses and quirky boutique accessories.
balanced composition and an explosion of color add extra appeal to her flickr account photos, drawing me to check out which fits boboniaa is rockin on a daily basis.

whether they be side-swept, wispy, bluntly cut, or -- worst of all -- curled, poofed and hairsprayed, bangs have played a constant role in my hairstyle history.
and, as fellow bangers(?) may know, this forehead fringe creates a slight problem when it comes to facial cleansing/moisturizing/masking.
thankfully, where bobby pins, headbands and ponytail holders have all failed me, i can now depend on the tassi -- the hottest new hair-holder-backer on the market.
unlike other inventions, the tassi is actually successful in keeping my bangs -- along with every other hair on my head -- out of my face while i perform my nightly facial cleansing routine. its cute, its comfortable, and its easy to use.
the tassi takes less than 30 seconds to whip out and pull over your head. but the best part is that removal of the "keep your hair outta there" product doesnt destroy my carefully crafted mane-- my strategically combed part and gently blow dried layers remain just as they were previously styled, no matter how carelessly i throw the tassi on and off.

i understand that movies are often about much more than good music, good clothes, good laughs and good looks, but its hard for me to stay interested if the film im watching doesnt have one -- preferably all -- of these qualities. good looks doesnt even have to be good looking people..but at least something aesthetically pleasing or artistic in some way. and this being my criteria for enjoying a movie, it is rare that i find one i am genuinely entertained by.
the bridge on the river kwai holds true to my claim. i had to watch it for my sociology class-- and sure it won 7 academy awards in 1957, but it was a struggle for me. a struggle to keep my eyes open, a struggle to find anything enjoyable about it at all. the soundtrack is virtually nonexistent, the dialogue is few and far between, the setting rarely changes, and, importantly, neither does the wardrobe.
the majority of the film features sweaty, dirty old men in ripped khaki uniforms. but then one lovely scene comes along and displays a prison escapee on the beaches of hawaii with some blonde beauty and my attention was grasped for a moment. that bathing suit! so classy, so retro -- so hot, so fresh.

this semester i am in a sociology class called racism and ethnicity. i like the class- anyone who knows me knows that i am incredibly drawn to any person of a different race, and historical events like the holocaust and U.S. slavery always intrigued me.
other than the content of the lectures, there is another reason i like this class- that reason is my professor. an elderly gentleman looking like he is straight out of 1973, professor bahr reminds me of one of those inspiring teachers from movies like The Dead Poet's Society or The Emperor's Club. he teaches with passion and conviction. he is straightforward and sincere, he kind of reminds me of my grandpa, and beside that, he has excellent style.
tweed, elbow-patched blazers, cardigan sweaters, and large-framed glasses are his wardrobe staples. he wears an adorable little hat and carries a dignified briefcase. if i was a guy, id like to dress like him. yep, a 70-year-old man.
but i think the key to professor bahr's look is that he isnt trying to have a look- he's just wearing what he's worn every day of his 30-year teaching career, yet he has a wardrobe cooler than the hippest hipster on the block.

since fashion shows run about six months ahead of season, i was long ago loving this line by BCBG MaxAzria, when the sidewalks were icy and the heater was on non-stop.
then, i could only wish for the days when it would be feasible to wear flouncy satin dresses and airy pale skirts...but those days are slowly disappearing, as the temperatures creep above the 50 degree mark.
among some of my BCBG-inspired looks are a floral patterned vintage dress from coal umbrella, a pale blue, sheer blouse from downeast outfitters, and a rosette-embellished tunic from some random store i can't remember the name of..

when i think of the brand penguin, i immediately have visions of adam brody/seth cohen and his laid back, geek chic style.
i personally have never felt a strong desire to rep the penguin label, but it has always held a special place in my heart- mostly because seth cohen holds a special place in my heart.
as i have blogged before, seth cohen is my ultimate dream man. notice, i said seth cohen, not adam brody. because, i do not actually know adam brody, but i certainly know seth cohen. in fact, i came to know him quite well, during his too-short life on my television screen. witty and funny, nerdy and charming, musically and fashionably inclined....seth cohen was a man among men.
as i said before, seth cohen and adam brody alike have been known to sport penguin polos on a regular basis. though the look works well for him, i didnt think i would ever find myself buying anything from the line - that is, until i recently made a stop in downeast outfitters, and found a plethora of adorable skirts at amazingly reduced prices.
when a skirt tag reads "$21.90," i am slightly skeptical about making the purchse. but when a skirt tag reads, "$21.90 (reduced from $140.90), then i snatch that thing up as quick as i can.

florals. pastels. 40s glamor.

sometimes when i step back and look at all of my recent purchases, i notice a major trend in the styles or colors of the items.
this time, i was taking inventory on my latest buys and realized that everything i bought was either 40s-inspired, pastel-colored, floral print, or all of the above. i didnt intentionally create this pattern, and i didnt even realize how much i was feelin all of these styles until i looked at everything as a whole.
i was amazed, therefore, when i checked up on the fall '08 fashion shows and found that the Micahel Kors collection is everything i love as of late, encapsulated into one line.

its ironic that these are my latest loves, as my previous loves have been rich, jewel-toned colors or a more 70s-style, bohemian look. yet now i have frequently been turning toward much more crisp, polished looks and very feminine, ballet-inspired colors. i guess some things just get old...or maybe i am getting old?!

i finally finished a few of the sewing projects i had been wanting to get around to but havent had time for yet...the first of which is a new case for my laptop. i made one before this, but it was quite shameful and obviously homemade. when my sister told me it was ugly, i decided i needed to give it another try -- this time it came out much better.

the second project was to make some new pillows for my bed, which was looking quite barren before the new additions. i didnt actually make new pillows, but bought some old ugly ones at D.I. for about $2 total, and then bought $1 fabric at walmart and recovered them.

the world wide web is a massive place. and i have a lot of time to explore it -- slightly embarrassed at how much time i have to explore it, in fact.
but if you have a job like mine, hours and hours of your day may be dedicated to expediting the blogosphere and dredging up new bands.
i have found that these countless hours on the Internet provide other benefits besides allowing me to have an extensive knowledge of runway and music trends, however. i often read the dictionary and thesaurus, for example. yesterday, i read a book on HTML code. the day before that i looked up recipes on the food network.
so, in actuality, these wasted hours at my job are helping me develop skills applicable to daily life. nevermind that these skills have nothing to do with my real job, Livetext support.

now, i would like to share a few of my latest loves for the eyes, ears, and tastebuds, that i discovered while traversing the W.W.W. on the clock at the tec lab:

1. Jessica Gonacha
An artist and designer residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Jessica Gonacha's work makes me really, really want a reason to invest in apartment decor. Her pieces are intricate, yet simple. whimsical, yet relatable. I love the graphic patterns that accompany her motifs of flowers, animals, and costumed children.

2. Beach House
The lackadaisical, dreamlike sounds of this Baltimore duo produce a calming, almost sedative effect on the listening ear. Pulling from 60s era sounds, the deliberate organ chords and entrancing synth lines of Beach House are sure to allure and engage -- particularly "Master of None"

3. Apples and Peanut Butter
I read on some health food site that sliced apples with a dollop of peanut butter is a fulfilling and nutritious snack. Normally i consider myself more of a banana and grape type of person when it comes to fruit, but peanut butter is one of my favorite things in life, and i am currently addicted to the simple combo.

4. Zooey Deschanel + M. Ward
Ever since hearing her sing in Elf, her old-time voice had me wondering if Zooey Deschanel had ever recorded any other songs. Reading online, i came across this song and discovered that Zooey is collaborating with M. Ward to record an entire LP. What a good combination.

my sister recently posted some reminiscent photos of our youth in a facebook album. i was pretty impressed with my sense of style- sporting keds, bright colors, florals, and some truly amazing handmade-by-mom bows, i paid obvious attention to everything from my footwear to my headwear.
it wouldnt be fair, however, if i didnt give most of the credit to my personal stylist of the 90s, a.k.a. my mom. she provided my wardrobe and probably chose my outfits on a daily basis. she took thought and care into coordinating all of her daughters in the hottest fits, so we were the envy of all the other ladies, from the monkey bars to the tether ball courts.
but i do remember this one time when my mom tried to get me to wear a floral button-down top with a striped skirt...i was having none of that. she insisted...i cried...it was all drama. but i think i won in the end. come to think of it, id probably wear the outfit now.
there was also this plaid blazer she was always trying to get me to wear....

anyway, on my trip down memory lane, i also noticed that i was rockin some trends that are once again relevant today.
so, to showcase to everyone how fashion-conscious i was even in my developmental years...a collage of early to mid-nineties kid-chic.

last night i had some time on my hands and decided to reorganize my shoes and clothes, as i have been facing a dilemma of not having enough space to store all of my attire.
in doing so, i came to the realization that maybe i dont have enough space because... i have a problem.
the above photo showcases about 40 pairs of shoes that comprise about 50% of my total footwear collection. i cannot possibly get around to wearing all of these shoes on a regular basis, but i can honestly say that each pair has a special place in my heart.
owning almost 100 pairs of shoes may seem sick and ridiculous, but i dont actually feel as bad about it, because i dont think a single pair of shoes cost me more than $19.99...
that still adds up to some dolladolla bills, but i feel even better because the majority of my shoes actually cost around $5 at thrift stores and walmart. how can i feel guilty about that?
the only reason im feeling a little bad is because i feel like i need to show each pair a little more love and give them some time on my feet.

last monday was presidents' day. and although its a little late, i would just like to blog a little thank you to all of those presidents. thanks for, generally, taking good care of this country. i dont know a lot about politics, but i like america pretty well.
a friend of mine attended a barbeque on presidents' day. at this barbeque, they went around and told about their favorite president. he claimed his favorite president to be grover cleveland. as i said before, i dont claim to know much about politics and presidents and such, but grover cleveland doesnt seem to be anybody's favorite president, so i think he was joking.
despite my lack of knowledge on the subject, ive always liked abe lincoln. maybe he wasnt as perfect as elementary u.s. history classes make him out to be, but i mean..he was the great emancipator, so he cant be that bad.

another reason i appreciate presidents' day is for the day off from school, and, as the main point of this post, i appreciate it for the excellent, amazing presidents' day sales. me and sarah went shopping together and had a hay day. hey day? anyway, it was great. the discounts just blew me away. 99 cent jewelry? 5 buck set of shirt AND shorts? a 90% off coat?? stay tuned for more coverage of this amazing shopping expedition.

the sun has returned! i dont know how long it will last, but this morning i awoke to clear skies and [what appeared to be] warmer weather. nevermind that it was really 12 degrees outside...this was evidence that my winter protest was obviously working, and i was going to take advantage of it. so laced up my nikes and went for a morning run.
enduring icicle ears, stiffened cheeks, and a burning throat, life was good.
listening to the sounds of kate nash kept me entertained for a good 45 minutes.

this glimpse of warmer, sunnier days has given me hope that maybe spring really is on its way, and one thing on my spring wardrobe list is a pair of backed sandals.
ive already begun my search, and scoping around, i was reminded of a childhood favorite- saltwater sandals.
every spring, from years 3-10, my mom would take us on a seasonal trip to nordstrom and get us all fitted in a new pair of salt water sandals. being the only time we every entered the doors of nordstrom, this trip was quite a treat. the smell of that fresh leather is one i associate with running through the sprinklers and skipping around disneyland.
when i did some research on these saltwater sandals, i found out that saltwater sandals go for a minimum of about $40. this gives me further gratitude for my mother's investment, but also brings disappointment. im way too cheap for that now. although i dont know if id have the option of buying them even if i wanted to, considering that, to my knowledge, they even make adult sizes...
so for now, looks like i will just have to reminisce of the days when my younger, smaller feet could sport the simple and style saltwater sandal.

if it snows one more flake i think im going to go craaaazy.

although i must admit, when i first came to utah, i was surprised to find myself finding genuine pleasure in the snow. the snow provided endless amounts of activities to us carefree freshman, ie. sledding, tubing, snowman-building, snowball fighting, and snowboarding. the snow was fascinating; the snow was magical. the snow was beautiful to look at, especially through the window of my warm and cozy dorm room. the snow provided a whole new side to my winter wardrobe, including scarves, beanies and boots.

since experiencing the non-stop snow that has been this winter, however, i am thoroughly annoyed and ready for it to stop.
if i slip and fall one more time, i think i will just cry, rather than try to suppress my laughter as i get up and walk away, as i usually do. if i walk out to my car in the darkness of 6:30 in the am and can't open my door because its frozen shut oooone more time...i will give up on my morning gym routine completely. and if i am forced into the very limited wardrobe of a hooded coat and rubber boots for one more day...my creative styling abilities may be permanently damaged.

suddenly ive discovered a new waves of time-wasting fashion blogs. and by time-wasting, i mean, i become so engrossed in them that i waste a lot of time, reading the latest posts and then heading back through the entire list of archives..
one of these blogs is by a lovely foreign girl named betty jackson. i dont know where exactly she is from..maybe france. she doesnt write in english, so i can't understand anything she is saying, but the innovative-yet-grounded outfit photos speak for themselves.

so i guess i changed the name of my blog. i wasn't really planning on this monumental change to happen at such a random moment-- it all started with my sister, namely paige melanie, telling me that my blog header was boring.
in an effort to be not-boring, i started making some new headers on photoshop. then i realized that my original thought for this blog- to present people [friends, strangers, celebrities, models] whom i thought were lookin good- never actually carried out.
so i rethought my mission of this blog. and, well, my mission is to bring all things hot and fresh. plain and simple. so of course i couldnt get that song out of my head...and a new blog is born.

i havent decided if im going to change the URL yet...probably not cause its kind of pointless...so there you have it. fresh out tha kitchen.
